Organoleptic Training

Event Date:
March 29, 2026
Event Time:
10:00 am
Event Location:
A. Smith Bowman Distillery 1 Bowman Dr., Fredericksburg, VA 22405
Two dates available: March 29th & May 17th. Both dates offer the same experience.
Curious if you have what it takes to be on a tasting panel? A. Smith Bowman Distillery invites you to put your senses to the test.
We have designed a course to evaluate the potential of you joining an Honorary Tasting Panel at A. Smith Bowman Distillery. This evaluation will test whether someone can accurately identify the basic taste recognized by the human taste buds, as well as other flavor profile tests. This is a crucial step for determining if you are qualified to be part of the panel.
In this class, you’ll work through four rounds of sensory challenges, from identifying basic flavor profiles (bitter, sour, sweet, & more) to distinguishing between different spirits (bourbon, rye, gin). Your goal is to correctly match what you taste and pass the panel.
But, beware. If you can’t identify the required flavors, you will not be asked to be on the panel. (Ever heard of “bitter blindness?”)
IF you pass, you will:
- Receive an ASB Honorary Tasting Panelist pin
- Assist our Master Distiller, David Bock, in tasting and picking a barrel that will go into a future special release.
- *Disclaimer – This does not guarantee you a bottle in the next release; you will still be required to enter the lottery for your opportunity to purchase a bottle.
If you don’t pass, you will:
- Still enjoy a fun morning of tasting and meeting fellow enthusiasts
Are you confident that you can tell sweet from sour? Bourbon from rye? Put your palate to the test.
Join us and see if you have what it takes to become an Honorary Tasting Panelist.
